Maryland Field Hockey

Maryland Historical Trust Press is the publishing unit of the State of Maryland's Division of Historical and Cultural Programs, an agency of the Department of Housing and Community Development. Publications include newsletters and numerous books, papers, and other print resources. A variety of publications offers the public a look at Maryland's historical and cultural past through architectural survey and inventory, archeological site exploration both above ground and underwater, and oral history documentation. Other publications help to make Maryland's populace more preservation conscious and provide technical assistance for saving cultural traditions, planning and managing historic sites, and enriching museum resources. The publications program is an educational outreach to the Maryland community -- serving schools and libraries, students and teachers, preservation planners and developers, historical organizations and citizen groups, and numerous others who, in learning, become more committed to protecting Maryland's historical and cultural legacy. Prepared to serve as a guide for a series of field tours organized for the annual meeting of the Vernacular Architecture Forum held in Annapolis in May 1998, this publication emphasizes pre-industrial architecture with a clear regional identity. Included are brief historical sketches and illustrations featuring architectural landmarks located in Anne Arundel, Kent, Queen Anne's, Talbot, Wicomico, and Somerset Counties. Designed to assist the reader to recognize patterns of development in regional building traditions and architectural decoration, this book provides useful insights into the evolving nature of the Chesapeake landscape inMaryland.

Atlas of the Breeding Birds of Maryland and the District of Columbia is the result of tens of thousands of hours of work in the field, in libraries, in file rooms, at computer terminals, and at kitchen tables. The culmination of five years, from 1983 through 1987, of intensive field work by professional wildlife biologists and some 800 volunteers, it presents data 199 species of birds that breed in Maryland and the District of Columbia. Each species account contains information on habitat requirements, distribution, abundance, history, and nesting characteristics. The field observers achieved more than 99 percent coverage of the study area and generated more than 100,000 records. The atlas also includes historical distribution data collected since the mid-1800s, nest records collected during the past 100 years, data from breeding bird censuses conducted since 1942, trend data from breeding bird surveys conducted since 1966, and relative abundance information from minaret data collected since 1983.
